What is FEAT-FMC:Families for Effective Autism Treatment Fresno/Madera County (FEAT-FMC) is a non-profit organization of parents and professionals, dedicated to help families with children who have received the diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), including Autism, Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD), or Asperger’s Syndrome. It offers a network of support where families can meet each other and discuss issues surrounding autism and treatment options. FEAT-FMC has a Board of Directors that meets monthly to discuss issues, establish priorities, and vote on the direction of the organization.Michelle is a very outgoing young lady with no verbal skills at this time. Because the school system has been unable to make any progress in improving Michelle's ability to communicate verbally, her parents are forced to engage a Speech Therapist to the tune of $80.00 per hour. In just three 1/2 hour sessions the speech therapist has already managed to get Michelle to pick a single picture out of a group of three pictures matching it with a picture the therapist is holding. The failure of public education to help children with autism improve is widely documented through I.E.P.s. These three sessions once again shows that autistic children have the capacity to learn if only public education would stop and smell the roses. FEAT-FMC is actively trying to promote a school for children with autism in the Central Valley (Fresno). Bakersfield has a successful school for children with autism along with a Community College. Sacramento has a renowned school for children with autism. The 300 miles from Bakersfield to Sacramento is a black hole for children with autism needing services not available through the public education process. The ABC School in Sacramento has offered to locate in Fresno provided FEAT-FMC can secure an appropriate site to set up operations. FEAT-FMC needs your help in securing a suitable location to open an autistic school in or around the Fresno area. Contact chuck@feat-fmc.org or call 559-232-9094. Someone knows of such a place we just need to make a connection. The FEAT-FMC board is always looking for volunteers looking to give back to their community.
